Freight class 125

A displayed density close to 8 can still belong to class 125.

Density class125

6 to under 8 lb/ft³

The lower boundary of 6 lb/ft³ is included. Exactly 8 lb/ft³ enters class 100.

7.5 lb/ft³Class 125
Density 7.5 inside the class 125 band
6 included8 → class 100

Toward class 175: 7.5 − 6 = 1.5 lb/ft³ above the cutoff. The lower edge remains included. Toward class 100: 8 − 7.5 = 0.5 lb/ft³ to the next boundary.

A 480 lb load and a near-boundary weight

A finished 48 × 48 × 48 in handling unit has a volume of 64 ft³. At 480 lb, density is 7.5 lb/ft³ and the estimate is class 125.

For the same exact volume, 511.936 lb gives 7.999 lb/ft³. Rounding that result to 8 before the class lookup would put it in class 100 incorrectly. Only a true result of at least 8 reaches the next band; at this volume that begins at 512 lb.

Precision cannot repair an incomplete footprint

If the 480 lb load extends to 50 in wide, its rectangular volume becomes about 66.667 ft³ and density falls to 7.2 lb/ft³. It remains class 125, but its distance from the 8 lb/ft³ boundary increases.

The three-decimal weight above is chosen to show a rounding edge, not to claim a scale can weigh a shipment that precisely. Use the accuracy supported by the actual measurement equipment and resolve carrier measurement rules before relying on a boundary result.

At 480 lb, change the envelope instead of the weight

A true 48 × 48 × 45 in unit occupies 60 ft³ and reaches 8 lb/ft³. The near-boundary weight example above keeps the larger cube and answers a different question.

Questions before you ship

Can the calculator display 8.000 but keep class 125?

Yes, if a value just below 8 rounds to 8.000 for display. The unrounded density controls the class. Reaching the exact lower boundary of class 100 is different from displaying a rounded value of 8.
